Art Exhibitions & Galleries

NGV blockbusters, Heide sculpture gardens, ACCA installations, and independent gallery openings across Melbourne. You see the work with someone who shares your interest in it.

What this looks like

What this looks like

Melbourne is one of Australia's great art cities. The NGV on St Kilda Road hosts major international exhibitions, from Impressionist collections to contemporary installations that fill entire rooms. Across the river, NGV Australia at Federation Square focuses on Australian and First Nations art. Heide Museum of Modern Art sits in parkland in Bulleen with sculpture gardens you can wander through.

Beyond the big institutions, there are independent galleries in Collingwood, Fitzroy, and the CBD. There are gallery openings on Thursday nights with free wine and the chance to talk to artists about their work, street art tours through Hosier Lane and surrounding laneways, and pop-up exhibitions in warehouses and converted shopfronts.

You set the speed. Some people want to read every plaque and spend fifteen minutes in front of one painting. Others prefer to walk through quickly and circle back to what catches their eye. Your support worker is there to talk about what you're seeing, help you find your way around, and make the visit comfortable.

Experience info

  • 2 to 4 hour gallery visits

What we include

What we include

Each visit covers research, comfort, access, transport, conversation and the gift shop.

Exhibition research

Your support worker checks what's on across Melbourne's galleries before each visit. They find exhibitions that match your interests and book timed tickets for popular shows so you skip the queues.

Pace and comfort

Galleries can be tiring on your feet. Your support worker knows where the benches are, when to suggest a cafe break, and how to pace the visit so you see everything you want without burning out.

Accessibility navigation

Large galleries have complex layouts. Your support worker handles wayfinding, locates lifts and accessible entrances, and keeps track of which rooms you've seen and which are left.

Transport and logistics

Pickup from your home, parking or train sorted, and drop-off after. For gallery crawls across multiple venues, your support worker plans the route and handles the travel between stops.

Conversation and context

Your support worker engages with the art alongside you. They read the exhibition guides, discuss what you're seeing, and share the experience so it feels like going to a gallery with a friend.

Gift shop and cafe

Your support worker helps you browse catalogues, postcards, and prints. Cafe stops are built into the visit so you can sit and talk about what stood out.

On the day

On the day

Your support worker picks you up at 10am with timed tickets for the NGV's new photography exhibition. You park underneath and take the escalator up to the main hall. The first room is enormous, floor-to-ceiling prints of places you recognise from around Victoria. You stand in front of one for five minutes, reading the artist's statement twice. Your support worker reads it too and you talk about the colour palette while moving to the next room. By the third gallery, you've found your favourite piece and take a photo of the description card so you can look up the artist later. After the photography show, you wander through the permanent collection and find a Monet you didn't know they had. Lunch is at the NGV cafe, sitting near the water wall, eating a toastie and flipping through the exhibition catalogue your support worker grabbed from the gift shop. You buy a postcard of that print before you leave.

Cost, eligibility & getting started

What a gallery visit costs, whether it fits your plan, and how to book your first exhibition day.

What it costs

Pricing follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. The amount depends on the type of support and whether your gallery visit falls on a weekday, evening, weekend, or overnight. If you don't have a relevant plan category, you can pay fee-for-service. Cost is always confirmed with you in writing before the experience starts.

Am I eligible?

Gallery and exhibition outings are usually funded under Assistance with Social & Community Participation, a Core Supports category. If your plan includes it, you're covered for NGV visits and gallery openings. A support coordinator can help check, and fee-for-service is available if you don't have a current plan.

Where we work

We're based in Thomastown and cover Greater Melbourne, including the northern, western, and eastern suburbs, for NGV, ACCA, Heide, and independent galleries. Many respite experiences extend into regional Victoria too, and gallery trips further afield can be planned as an overnight experience.
