Fishing & Water Activities
Pier fishing at Mornington, kayaking on the Yarra, paddleboarding at Albert Park Lake. Time on the water with a rod, a paddle, or just your feet dangling off a jetty.
What this looks like
Melbourne has water everywhere. Port Phillip Bay stretches from Williamstown to Portsea with piers, jetties, and rock walls where you can drop a line. The Yarra River runs through the city with spots for kayaking, canoeing, and gentle paddling. Albert Park Lake and the Maribyrnong River offer calm, flat water for paddleboarding and kayak hire.
Fishing can be as simple as sitting on a pier with a handline and a bucket. Or it can mean a full setup with a rod, tackle box, and an esky full of bait. Some people fish to catch dinner. Others just enjoy the waiting, the water, and the quiet. Water activities range from guided kayak tours to casual paddleboard sessions at local lakes.
Your support worker handles the gear, the transport, and the setup. They bait hooks if you need help, paddle alongside you on the water, and share the slow pace of a day spent by the water. They're someone who enjoys being outdoors and is happy whether you catch ten fish or none.

What we include
Transport and your support worker are covered. You pay for bait, any gear hire and food.
Spot selection
Your support worker picks fishing spots based on what's biting and conditions. Sheltered piers on windy days, open beach fishing when the weather is calm, or freshwater rivers when you want a change of scenery.
Gear setup
Rods, reels, tackle, bait, and buckets. Your support worker brings everything, sets up your line, and teaches knots and casting if you're learning. For water activities, they manage hire equipment and safety gear.
Water safety
Your support worker manages life jackets for kayaking and paddleboarding, checks water conditions, and stays within safe areas. For pier fishing, they watch footing near edges and manage wet surfaces.
Transport and supplies
Pickup with all gear loaded. Bait from the tackle shop on the way, esky with cold drinks, sunscreen and hats. Your support worker handles everything so you just need to show up.
Patience and company
Fishing is a waiting game. Your support worker is happy to sit quietly, chat when you want to talk, and share the excitement when something bites. They enjoy the pace as much as you do.
Catch and release
If you catch something, your support worker helps unhook it, measure it, and take a photo. If it's a keeper and you want to take it home, they clean and pack it. If not, they help you release it safely.
On the day
Your support worker picks you up at 7am because the fish bite best early. You stop at the tackle shop in Frankston and grab a bag of pilchards and a packet of squid strips. The Mornington Pier car park is half-empty this early on a Wednesday. Your support worker carries the rods and the esky while you carry the tackle box. You set up at the end of the pier where the water is deeper. Your support worker rigs your line with a running sinker and a pilchard chunk, and you cast out over the railing. The line hits the water and you prop the rod on the rail and wait. For twenty minutes, nothing. Then the tip twitches and bends and you pick it up and wind. It's a leatherjacket, small but real. Your support worker photographs it in your hand before you drop it back. Over the next two hours, you catch three more and lose two. Your support worker catches one and insists yours was bigger. By 10am the wind has come up and the bites have stopped. You pack up, wash your hands at the tap, and drive to the fish and chip shop on the foreshore for brunch. You eat flake and chips on a bench overlooking the water, still talking about the one that got off the hook.

What it costs
Pricing for fishing and water activity experiences follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. The amount depends on the type of support and whether it falls on a weekday, evening, weekend or overnight. If you don't have a relevant plan category, you can pay fee-for-service. Cost is always confirmed with you in writing before your session starts.
Am i eligible?
Fishing and water activity sessions are usually funded under Assistance with Social & Community Participation, a Core Supports category. If your plan includes this category, a day of fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding can be planned around what you enjoy. A support coordinator can help check your plan, and fee-for-service is available if you don't have one.
