Pop Culture & Gaming

Conventions & Expos

PAX Aus, Supanova, Comic Con, and every expo worth lining up for. Full days of panels, demos and merch.

What this looks like

Thousands of fans in one building.

Conventions put thousands of people who care about the same things you do in one building. Demo stations where you can try unreleased games, artist alleys where creators sell prints and commissions, panels where voice actors and developers talk about their work.

Melbourne hosts some of the best cons in Australia. PAX Aus at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is the big one for gaming. Supanova and Oz Comic-Con bring the pop culture side with celebrity guests, cosplay competitions, and sprawling merch halls. There are smaller events too, focused on indie games, retro gaming, or specific fandoms.

Your support worker goes through the program with you beforehand. You decide which panels to hit, which exhibitors to check out, and when to take breaks. They're there to get you through the crowds, keep track of the schedule, and share the excitement with you.

What we include

What a convention day includes.

From planning to getting home.

Pre-event planning

Your support worker reviews the program with you before the day. You pick the panels, exhibitors, and demos that matter most, and build a rough schedule so you don't miss the highlights.

Crowd navigation

Conventions get packed. Your support worker helps you move through the crowds, find quieter spaces when you need a break, and keep track of where things are across the venue.

Queue strategy

Some panels and demos have long lines. Your support worker helps manage wait times, keeps you company in queues, and knows when to line up early for the things that matter most to you.

Transport and logistics

Pickup from your home, parking or public transport sorted, and drop-off at the end. Multi-day conventions can include overnight accommodation if that works better for you.

Sensory awareness

Conventions are loud, bright, and busy. Your support worker knows where the quiet zones are, when to suggest a food break, and how to pace the day so you enjoy the whole thing.

Shared enthusiasm

Your support worker is matched to your interests. They're someone who gets excited about the same things you do, so the whole day feels like going to a con with a friend.

On the day

A convention day, start to finish.

You get picked up early because PAX doors open at 10 and the keynote panel fills fast. Your support worker has the app loaded with your starred sessions. You grab a lanyard and program guide at the entrance, and head straight for the expo hall. Three rows in, you spot a demo station for a game you've been watching trailers for. You play two rounds while your support worker holds your bag and chats with the developer at the next booth. After, you hit the tabletop area and play a round of something new with two strangers who become temporary teammates. Lunch is overpriced convention food eaten standing up near a window. Afternoon is artist alley, where you buy a print of your favourite character and talk to the artist about their process. You leave carrying a bag of merch and talking about which panels to hit tomorrow.

Cost, eligibility & getting started

What a convention day costs.

What it costs

Pricing follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. The amount depends on the type of support and whether your convention day falls on a weekday, evening, weekend, or as an overnight multi-day event. If you don't have a relevant plan category, you can pay fee-for-service. Cost is always confirmed with you in writing before the experience starts.

Am I eligible?

Convention and expo days are usually funded under Assistance with Social & Community Participation, a Core Supports category. If your plan includes it, it can cover panels, demos, and merch halls. A support coordinator can help check, and fee-for-service is available if you don't have a current plan.

Where we work

We're based in Thomastown and cover Greater Melbourne, including the northern, western, and eastern suburbs, for MCEC and other convention venues. Many respite experiences extend into regional Victoria too, and multi-day conventions with overnight stays can take us further afield.
