Cosplay & Fan Events

Costume meetups, fandom gatherings, and cosplay competitions across Melbourne. Dress up, be seen, and spend time with people who love the same characters and universes you do.

What this looks like

Cosplay & Fan Events

Melbourne's cosplay scene runs year-round. Big conventions like Oz Comic-Con and Supanova have dedicated cosplay competitions with staging, lighting, and crowds cheering. Smaller meetups happen at parks, libraries, and community spaces where groups gather in costume for photo shoots and socialising.

Fan events cover everything from anime screenings to themed trivia nights to fandom-specific gatherings. There are Harry Potter pub crawls, Studio Ghibli picnics in the Botanic Gardens, and Star Wars groups that meet in full armour. The common thread is people showing up as the characters and communities they love.

Your support worker helps with the practical side: packing and transporting costumes, moving through venues in bulky outfits, and carrying supplies. They also share the experience. They know the events, understand the culture, and are happy to be part of it.

What we include

Support for getting to events in costume and through the day.

Costume logistics

Your support worker helps pack, transport, and set up your costume. Armour pieces, wigs, props, makeup supplies. They help you get ready at the venue and carry what you need throughout the day.

Getting around events

Moving through crowded venues in costume takes planning. Your support worker scouts paths, holds doors, watches your props when you need a break, and keeps track of competition schedules and photo meetup times.

Photo support

Your support worker takes photos for you, holds reflectors or props during shoots, and helps you find the best lighting and backdrops at each venue.

Transport and timing

Pickup with enough time to get into costume at the venue. Drop-off with all your gear packed safely. Your support worker keeps the timeline on track so you don't miss registrations or group meetups.

Meeting other fans

Fan events are social by nature. Your support worker helps start conversations with other cosplayers, facilitates group interactions, and makes sure you feel part of the community.

Fandom knowledge

Your support worker is matched to your fandoms. They know the characters, the references, and the culture, so the whole day feels like attending with someone who shares your passion.

On the day

A fan event, start to finish.

Your support worker arrives at 8am with the car boot cleared for your costume boxes. You've been working on this build for weeks and the armour pieces are wrapped in towels to protect the paint job. At the venue, you find a quiet corner near the bathrooms and start getting into costume. Your support worker holds pieces while you strap them on, fixes the wig cap that keeps sliding, and zips up the back you can't reach. Once you're suited up, you walk into the main hall and three people ask for photos before you make it past the entrance. Your support worker snaps pictures from good angles while you pose. At the cosplay meetup for your fandom, there are twelve other people in character and someone organises a group shot on the stairs. You swap Instagram handles with two of them. Lunch is tricky in gauntlets, so your support worker grabs food while you hold a spot at a table. By 4pm your feet are sore and your wig is itching, but you've got two hundred photos and a competition entry ribbon pinned to your chest piece.

Cost, eligibility & getting started

Cost, funding and where we work.

What it costs

Pricing follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. The amount depends on the type of support and whether your event or meetup falls on a weekday, evening, weekend, or overnight. If you don't have a relevant plan category, you can pay fee-for-service. Cost is always confirmed with you in writing before the experience starts.

Am I eligible?

Cosplay meetups and fan event outings are usually funded under Assistance with Social & Community Participation, a Core Supports category. If your plan includes it, it can fund costume support and getting around events. A support coordinator can help check, and fee-for-service is available if you don't have a current plan.

Where we work

We're based in Thomastown and cover Greater Melbourne, including the northern, western, and eastern suburbs, for cosplay meetups, conventions, and fandom gatherings. Many respite experiences extend into regional Victoria too, and events further afield can be planned as an overnight experience.

How to start

Tell us which fan events you want to go to and we'll handle the logistics. We match you with a support worker who shares your fandom and book your first event.
